Trip to Puerto Penasco

We and a small group decided to go to Puerto Penasco for "lunch" about 80 miles forty or so is paved. Four miles of sand and the rest washboard dirt and gravel. The paved road is very well done not at all like we had been told. When they get it done it will a very nice drive.

Small sand dunes along the road.

The beginning of four miles of deep loose sand. The Suzuki never missed a beat. Only one rig got stuck as he forgot to put it in four wheel drive.

Salt flats at he end of the sand road.

This is the "Caravan" gathering for the return to El Golfo. It was a very short day as we didn't get to town until 11 AM and had to be ready to leave by 3 PM.

A longer view of the shopping area in down town. We are directly over the fish and shrimp markets.

View from the terrace in Puerto Penasco. This is where we eat and then shopped after eating.

This is the "Cyotee Pizza Parlor" Their spelling, not mine.

This is our Super Mercado" in El Golfo we use this store most of the time. There are seven of these stores in town.

Be sure to look at the Olympics.

2008 El Golfo Senior Olympics

Let the games begin. The 2008 El Golfo Senior Olympics are about to start. These games have been put on every year for the last seven years. Almost every one in the park participates in some way Contestants, judges, and many helpers. This year we had eleven teams with six athletes per team. A good time was had by all. There was much cheating and stealing of team flags, intercepting of tossed balls and other skulduggery. Those who cheated and were caught had their scores adjusted unless they bribed a judge. There was beer and Margareta's as well as "bloody Marie's" for the contestants which made contest in the afternoon a little scary.
The Flag is put up for the games.

The Doves were released. We didn't have any doves as they were eaten by the towns people. So we used balloons.

The Olympic Flame arrives.

The torch is lit by the Olympic King

We even had a fly over on the opening day. He didn't fly over on closing day as he wasn't real sober by then.

There were so many contestants there were few spectators.

All athletes need to scratch. Note Gavin is from Scotland and is training very hard with a beer.

This is the "winning" put a hole in one and the only one in the contest.

WE also have the always popular "raw egg" toss.

No synchronized swimming for us. We throw a volly ball into rings in the pool. Backward.

Shuffle board has to be in every Senior Olympics

To make it a little more interesting the contestants were blind folded.

Even Olympians have to eat. Gloria and three other ladies made over one hundred sandwiches and gallons of potato soup to feed the athletes.

This is horse shoe toss. Plastic shoes and pins.

This contest is a timed team event they must transport a bag of water and fill a gallon Milk jug. This was a two mimed event as the tide was coming in. When they waded to the sand spit the water wasn't,t ankle deep when it was over they waded back in knee deep water. The photographer stayed on the shore side to take the photos.

This is the Golf ball sling shot.

And the winning team is the Marlins with over 2000 points

Trip to down town El Golfo

WE made a trip to town for veggies today. WE got two pounds of tomato's, eight bananas, a head of lettuce, two heads of broccoli, six tangelos, one jikama and two cucumbers for $5.70 U.S.
Fresh asparagus, $.50 a bunch.
The vendor getting Cactus ready to sell. It is diced up and cooked with scrambled eggs and used in omelets.

Getting a little sugar.

Getting tomato's and bananas.

Peppers, Kama, carrots, and onions.

This is the vegetable market. It is open on Wednesday only.

The photos below are from a previous trip I made with the park guide. He takes new arrivals on a walking tour of town and explains where the stores are and which one has what. I hadn't been on it in several years so went along.
This is the City hall, Police station and Court House. It is located on one of the three paved streets in town.

This restaurant used to be one of the best in town but now the new owner has ruined it. We eat there many times last year.

This is a shark that got caught in their shrimp net. The sharks do a lot of damage to the nets and it takes a day or two to repair them.

This is one of the trailers they use to pull the boats.

These two photos are of a small part of the El Golfo fleet. There are about four hundred boats all together this is one of the pull outs

GOOD MORNING FROM EL GOLFO

Just another breath taking sunrise in El Golfo.
We are truly an international park. U.S., Canada, Scotland.

Close up of Gavin's rig. He doesn't really live there.

This is the club house with the Shuffle board Court in front and swimming pool in the back. We Also have Horse shoes and Boka ball. Then there is Snake toss and card tournaments.

Boat coming in after a long day at sea fishing for shrimp.

Here the fisherman are cleaning their nets waiting to be pulled out.

Pulling a boat out on a trailer. This is new technology here up until a few years ago they just drug the boats out on the sand. But after a while they had to rebuild the bottoms as they were sanding holes in them.

This is the Mexican Marines getting ready to go on patrol from El Golfo. After this post we found out that the Marines confiscated a boat and two bags of cargo along with a fisherman.

These are a few of thew guys at happy hour. Starts at 4 PM and ends when every one is gone. O'devures are served and BYOB. A good way to end a busy day.

Gloria at happy hour. The man in the red shirt is 91 years old.

We are now in El Golfo Mexico

This was our first day back to El Golfo and we have been busy ever since we parked the rig.
The owner of "Los Conchas" restaurant in down town El Golfo. This was his last day in business. When we showed up he said beer and Margareta's are on me. Then when about thirty of us showed up we each got a bill to pay as we left. He served good Chines food but not very good Mexican. Every year he had a free "Welcome back" dinner with free drinks. (really) He will be missed. The new owner starts on the Second. Los Conchas

Howard and Edna Lee friends we have met here and traveled with many times. Having a farewell drink in "Los Conchas" It will open on the 2nd under new management.

Judy Winsett enjoying her wedding anniversary on New Years Eve. The Winesett's have been friends ever since we have been coming to El Golfo.

Gloria having a glass of wine after New Years dinner.

We start the new year with the "Pelican plunge" I am the one taking photos Gloria's stayed in the coach. This is an annual event at El Golfo. It is strictly a spectator sport for us.

The Party is over! Hats and horns will be stored for another year.

Notice that the leaves are all on one side of the trees.

HAPPY NEW YEAR and welcome to life on the Sea of Cortez's. High for to day 25.7 mph. 61 degrees. Elv. 18 ft.
